Clinical Consultation for Cult Recovery
Most therapists encounter a cult survivor or someone recovering from a high-control group experience without any training in how to recognize or work with what they're seeing. The dynamics of undue influence, coercive control, and systemic abuse create unique clinical presentations — and unique risks in the therapeutic relationship itself. These consultations are designed to help you work with this population competently, ethically, and effectively.
Who This is For
I offer consultation to licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals who are working with or considering taking on clients recovering from:
-
Religious cults and high-control religious groups
-
Political or ideological high-control organizations
-
Therapeutic or self-help cults
-
Intimate partner coercive control and one-on-one undue influence
You don't need to already be an expert. Many clinicians come to consultation precisely because they've recognized they're out of their depth with a particular client and want to develop the knowledge and skills to help effectively.
What We Cover
Consultations are tailored to your specific needs and cases, and may include:
-
Understanding cults, high-control groups, and the mechanics of undue influence
-
Recognizing the clinical presentations common in cult survivors
-
Navigating the therapeutic relationship with this population — including transference, enactment, and the risk of retraumatization
-
Ethical considerations specific to this work
-
Clinical approaches and treatment frameworks
-
Case-specific feedback and direction
Why Work With Me
I have been working clinically with survivors of cults, high-control groups, and coercive control since entering private practice in Vermont in 2017. My work with this population spans religious cults, political and ideological groups, therapeutic and self-help organizations, and intimate partner coercive control.
I am the author of "Cultic Abuse Recovery: Counseling Considerations," published in the International Journal of Cultic Studies (2019), one of the field's primary peer-reviewed publications. I have presented on cult recovery and have been interviewed as a subject matter expert on cult psychology by media.
How It Works
Consultations are available via telehealth to mental health professionals nationwide. I offer both single consultations and ongoing consultation relationships depending on your needs.
Individual consultations are $200 for 50 minutes or $280 for 90 minutes. Group consultations for up to four professionals are available, with cost divided among participants. Pre-licensed professionals are welcome, though a separate clinical supervisor overseeing licensure hours is required.
